How to Calculate Landscaping Materials
Accurately estimating material quantities saves money and reduces waste. Use the formulas below or our free calculator above to get instant results for your landscaping project.
Mulch Calculator
Standard mulch depth is 2–4 inches. For new beds, use 3–4 inches. For refreshing existing mulch, 2 inches is usually sufficient. Formula: (Length × Width × Depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. One cubic yard of mulch weighs approximately 400–800 lbs depending on moisture content and type.
Gravel Calculator
Gravel is typically applied at a 2-inch depth for decorative purposes and 4+ inches for driveways. Formula: (Length × Width × Depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. One cubic yard of gravel weighs approximately 2,700 lbs (1.35 tons).
Sand Calculator
Sand is commonly used as a base layer under pavers (1–2 inches) or for fill. One cubic yard of sand weighs approximately 2,700 lbs. Always order 5–10% extra to account for compaction and waste.
Topsoil Calculator
For new lawns, apply 4–6 inches of topsoil. For garden beds, 3–4 inches is common. One cubic yard of topsoil weighs approximately 2,200 lbs and covers about 108 sqft at a 3-inch depth.
Paver Calculator
To calculate the number of pavers, divide your total area (in square feet) by the area of one paver. Always add 10% for cuts, waste, and future replacements. Common paver sizes include 4×8, 6×6, 6×9, and 12×12 inches.
Sod Calculator
Measure your lawn area in square feet (length × width). Add 5% for trimming and fitting around edges and obstacles. Sod is typically sold by the square foot, pallet (450–700 sqft), or roll.
